Our local Fire Chief Kevin Wiliams has announced plans to resign his position affective May 1. If this doesn’t bother you or strike you as odd it’s because you’ve never met Kevin.
Kevin says that he loves this community and plans to raise his son who will arrive soon with the help of his lovely wife, Samantha.
Kevin was one of those young boys who lived, breathed, eat, and dreamed about the fire department and of one day being chief. He took Fire Science classes in high school and every single other fire training class he could get himself into through the department as well to prepare himself for a career as a paid firefighter when he graduated.
He has held several positions within the department all the way from Jr. Captain up to and including his current role as Fire Chief. Kevin has continued his training to this day to make himself as prepared as he can possibly be not only to perform his job but also as to be able to use his hard earned skills in our own community.
Kevin did get that job he always wanted and in a big way as he is a paid Firefighter for the U.S. Government. Kevin has made the Fire Service his life and tried to devote himself to it, well as much as Samantha will let him anyway.
There was a time period though were he did step away from the fire department due to the lack of support he felt he was receiving from the limited membership staff in maintaining the equipment and level of service our community deserved. He kept his membership but chose not to run calls with the department so as to avoid any further problems. In the late summer and fall of last year though, Kevin was approached by members of the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue association as well as by our county supervisor Roger Welch about returning to the department, because as he says “they felt that the department was heading in the wrong direction”.
