Naoko Takao, a native of Japan, will give her first recital at The Theatre in Washington on Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m. Takao has been active as recitalist, orchestral soloist, and chamber musician in the United States as well as in France, Taiwan, and Japan. Hearthstone’s auction

Mark your calendars and plan to attend Sperryville’s most lively auction on Saturday, April 9 from 3-6 p.m. Hearthstone’s most significant, yearly fundraising event begins with an hour tong silent auction at 3 p.m. at the school, located west of Sperryville on Rt. 211. Donations of goods and services from the community are gratefully received by calling 987-9212. Items can also be dropped off during school hours.

Vertical Cabernet Sauvignon tasting

Vertical Cabernet Sauvignon tasting will be held on Saturday, April 9 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m at Gray Ghost in Amissville. Blacktie optional evening features vintages 1993-2002 of Gray Ghost Cabernets, gourmet hors d'ouevres and discussion. Reservations required. The cost is $64 per person plus tax. Meadery events

On April 9 Smokehouse Winery of Sperryville will host an evening of music starting at 8 p.m. which will feature dulcimer, guitar, percussion, voice et al. Unique local musicians will entertain in the folk tradition. Meads will be available (limited), small fee required. Call 987-3194 for information.

Spring cleanup

The first spring cleanup project of Route 231 for a couple of miles from Route 522 to Ashby Road will take place on April 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Free mead will be provided to the participants as well as other nourishments after the mornings cleanup. Small fee require. Call 987-3194 for information.

Earth Day celebration

Earth Day celebration will be held on April 17 starting 12 noon at Ben Venue Farm on Route 729 Ben Venue Road at the race course. Fun and kite flying for children of all ages. Parents can bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day as well.

Therapy dogs

Waggin’ Hearts Therapy dogs will meet on Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rappahannock County 4-H office. If you are interested in becoming a therapy dog team with your favorite canine or would like more information about therapy dogs, please join us. Outreach Director to visit

Congressman Eric Cantor’s Community Outreach Director, Mrs. Barbara Taylor, will be available at the Rappahannock County Library, 4 Library Road, Washington, on Thursday, April 14, at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Congressman Cantor s office is happy to provide this service to speak with constituents who need assistance or have problems of a federal nature. Citizens are also welcome to express their opinions on matters of concern, particularly national topics or issues before the United States Congress. Ki Theatre announces spring season

Two one-act plays by Russia's most famous playwright, Anton Chekhov, open Ki Theatre's spring se son on Saturday, April 16 at 8 p.m. These short plays (“The Marriage Proposal" and “The Bear"), are set in rural Russia in the late 19th century.
