Tuesday morning started early for the Rappahannock County Public School Board as they gathered for a special session to hear some disquieting news from superintendent of schools, Dr. Bob Chappell.
Chappell called the meeting in lieu of events that transpired at the Board of Supervisors meeting the day before when Chappell informed the board that the only bid they have received for the school facility construction package (which includes a variety of construction projects) was approximately $1.4 million dollars higher than expected.
The school board found itself faced with a difficult decision. Approximately $3,715,000 has already been approved for the facilities construction plan for the 2005-2006 school year budget, however the construction bid from Lantz Construction in Winchester has come to $5,102,144.
The construction plan includes several different projects each with their respective priority to the school board. Going from the highest to the lowest in priority the projects are as follows:
• A new sloping roof was planned for the elementary school as well as an electrical system upgrade and an upgrade to the HVAC system.
• At the high school level, there were plans for an upgraded track and athletic field and an auxiliary gym.
• Coming in last on the priority list was the addition of three classrooms to the elementary school.
Two Options
In the wake of insufficient funds budgeted for these different facilities the board must now choose which project they plan to eliminate in order to stay within the $3,715,000 budget.
In the meeting Tuesday the board discussed two different approaches to a hopeful solution.
