“Most of the others don’t have fresh cut and fresh ground beef,” he added, “the first time I tasted beef freshly ground made me know I did not want to buy it anywhere else again. This is a calling card for this store.”
That is one of the features that has regulars come back time and again to do their shopping in the small market, which carries a variety of items from canned goods to staples, such as bread and milk.
“I am going to be adding more upscale items, such as gourmet mustards, grilling sauces and natural foods that Mountainside used to cany,” he said, “we want to constantly upgrade, to see what people want.”
, As for the future of the Sperryville Comer Store, Thompson knows it will be difficult to continue competing with larger stores outside of Rappahannock County, but for now he will rely on the convenience factor.
“It helps to know that we are not solely reliant on the groceiy business, but we will definitely keep it since we have other endeavors on each side,” said Thompson, adding that he has no plans to change the store from what it is now due to the expansive histoiy and tradition of the old-time country store.
