Hearthstone School celebrated the graduation of its kindergarten, 8th and 12th grade classes on June 2. Parents, friends and teachers gathered in the school’s community room in chairs set in a spiral, to symbolize the children’s’ journey from one phase of their education and life into another. After walking to the center of the spiral as kindergarteners, 8th and 12th grades, students joined School Director Jane Mullan at the center of the spiral to receive their diplomas and then exited the spiral as 1st and 9th graders, and high school graduates.
The celebration began with the entire student body performing several songs on drums and percussion instruments, beginning with a beautiful and stirring African blessing song. The school band then performed several songs as well.
Kindergarteners Ezra Albrecht, Caragh Heverly, Alessandro Laima, Trusten Murrah and Hannah Walsh were led through the spiral by their teacher, Ms. Kitty Keyser. Mullan then welcomed each child into the first grade to the applause of parents and friends. Each child received a candle and spiral shell as keepsakes of this first step in their educational journey.
Eighth grader Ashley Dawson then entered the spiral. She received her diploma, as
85.7%
