Correction
In the editorial entitled “Heading Out” in the June 15 edition of The Rappahannock News, the Rules list attributed to Bill Gates is incorrect. This list is the work of Charles J. Sykes, author of the book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can’t Read, Write Or Add. Widely circulated, the list has popped up over the years with the majority of sources claiming that it originated with Bill Gates. Not to be among poor company, the top honors for misattribution should probably go to The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, which printed the list twice in three weeks in mid-2000, the first time crediting it to “Duluth state rep. Brooks Coleman of Duluth,” and the second time to Bill Gates. The Rappahannock News regrets the error.
