There’s something perversely satisfying about getting so deeply involved in a book that you can’t even enjoy your own vacation. It makes the book, better that you’re ignoring a world full of fun and and minigolf to hide and read, the way a stolen french fry always tastes better.
So, Rappahannock, I think you should try this. Go out and ruin your vacation on purpose. Pick a book that’s highly acclaimed for blowing people’s minds, in a genre you don’t usually read. Stay away from books with beach towels on the cover and “Great summer Read!” stickers. Pick something interesting, threatening, disturbing. Read John Varley’s Gaea trilogy, about aliens the size of planets and centaurs with three sets of genitals. Read Philip Gourevitch’s “We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families”, which describes Rwanda before and after of the machete genocide. Read Watership Down, and keep telling yourself that it’s only rabbits. Read something because it’s good, not because it’ll fit nicely into your carry on bag.
