As for Christ Church, Rev. Wheatley feels hopeful about her flock, its future, and the future of the community despite real obstacles, such as rebuilding delays. At least 60 percent of her congregation—65-75 families—has returned and plans to stay to help revitalize the community, at least for now.
“The storm was a great leveler for us,” she told us during dinner one night. “Before Katrina, we were known as that pretty old church down by the beach that is dying. Now we’re reaching out into the community, cooperating with churches like yours, Camp Coast Care, and a youth reconstruction corps, which will be building a permanent structure on our property as a base for their activities. We are listening to what Christ told his disciples before he was crucified, which is, essentially, when I am gone, be not for me but for one another.
