An annual affair, the Hackley Store’s “Pickin’ Parties” began their sixth year on Saturday. This song fest of country singing and fun draws visitors from near and far each summer—and well into the Fall weather permitting—as local musicians from Rappahannock and Culpeper counties strum their guitars and play and sing memoryfilled country songs for an appreciative audience that gathers in front of the store at dusk with their lawn chairs.
According to organizer, Debbie Zinn, “These ‘Pickin’ Parties’ are just that—whoever shows up to play and sing. Most are locals and some are regulars at the Salem Fire Hall in Culpeper. There’s no set schedule—my cousin Brad Nicholas, who runs the ^tore, and I just sit down and come up with the next date.” Weather permitting, the next Pickin’ Party will be held on Saturday, July 22 from 7 until 9 p.m.
There also is a 50/50 raffle with half of the winnings going to a local charity in the county such as the Rappahannock 4-H program, Amissville Ruritan Club Community Services, or the American Cancer Society. Pizza, sandwiches, and beverages are available at the store to make the evening a picnic on the lawn.
