but it wasn’t very complex.
“You can’t make any modifications anymore,” noted Johnson. “The only thing that makes this car different than the one next to it is the color.”
When Johnson was 13, competing in the soap box derby was different.
“You could modify the fuselage all you wain ted,” he said. “The only thing that had to be the same was the wheels.”
After winning his home town soap box derby in Springfield, Illinois, the young Johnson went to the finals in Chicago. “I really thought I was something,” Johnson grinned and then added, “but when we went to Chicago for the big race, I lost in the first heat.”
Since then, Johnson has become a racing enthusiast. Throughout his expansive aviation career he has dabbled in designing and racing.
