I feel compelled to respond to a comment
reported in last week’s article on the June 5 public hearing for the county budget. I was astonished to read that a mem• her of our community actually believes that our teachers are “under worked and overpaid.” Thinking that perhaps there was more meaning to those words than I knew, I looked them up, a trait which I hope I have instilled in my students over the years.
Webster’s defines “underwork” as, “A verb which means either working clandestinely to undermine, working upon anything less than is sufficient, or working at a lower price than others in like employment.” Well, the first meaning certainly doesn’t apply, teachers are neither clandestine nor seeking to destroy our schools. The second doesn’t seem to apply either, given that our schools are fully accredited and ranked in the top five percent in the nation (according to Newsweek magazine which placed us in the top 1000 of over 27,000
