and challenges of learning something new, it was worth it when Patty, the owner, exclaimed, “it’s so good to see walls again.” Patty and her family of four had left before the hurricane struck and returned to find their home in five feet of water with nearly everything lost. Now they were living in trailers in their front yard looking at a stripped down model of their former 3bedroom, 2-bath house.
The Slidell area is located some 40 miles north of New Orleans and received significant damage. Rouses were in all stages of repair and disrepair. Some had to be completely bulldozed while others seemed relatively unscathed. The streets were lined with not only FEMA trailers but piles of water soaked carpets and moldy belongings that would eventually be picked up by huge trash trucks.
“Blue plastic tarps were everywhere,” remarked Mustoe who said that their base of operations was Grace Memorial Baptist Church that had sustained some wind damage and lost shingles but the flood waters never reached it. .
As such it had housed several volunteer groups and its associate Pastor Jerry Smith , coordinated work sites as well as working with FEMA, the Red Cross and other service groups to provide assistance.
Rev. Phil Bailey admitted that the physical challenges of the work was hard on most of the group. “But when you are serving others there is a special strength that comes that makes it possible,” he added.
