A stem clerk and an unaware arriving customer thwarted an armed robbery at the Hillsdale convenience store Tuesday night.

According to the RCSO, a call came in at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday from the Hillsdale store, east of the Tbwn of Washington on U.S. 211. The clerk reported that a white male with visible tattoos on each cheekbone and wearing biboveralls, a tan jacket and a black stocking cap entered the store and passed her a note demanding money.
After the clerk refused to cooperate, Hitt allegedly displayed a sawed-off bolt-action .22 rifle and pointed it at her.
A Hillsdale customer pulling into the parking lot spooked the perpetrator, who ran out of the store and drove away in a White Chevrolet four-door sedan. The Hillsdale clerk was able to get a partial tag number.
Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) Deputy Thomas Leake and Sgt. Charles Moore were the first to respond to the scene, and were later aided by State Troopers Kerianne Corbett and Brandon Johnson. RCSO notified surrounding jurisdictions and businesses to be on the lookout for the getaway vehicle and Lt. Connie Smith and Maj. Chris Williams arrived at the scene to investigate.
During the investigation, a man called the RCSO and said that he had convinced Hitt to return with him to the crime scene. Upon returning to the scene, the clerk identified Hitt as the perpetrator, although he did not have tattoos on his neck.
At first, Hitt denied his role in the, crime. However, after being interrogated by Smith he made a full confession. Members of the RCSO retrieved the
