endeavor. Visitors who tour Montpelier during the restoration will be treated to a unique look at the methods, manpower and luck needed to achieve such authenticity.
“It’s probably the most researched and authentic restoration going on in the country,” said Peggy Vaughn, communications director for The Montpelier Foundation. The project also includes a new visitors center, which is slated to open in March.
The restoration is scheduled to be completed in 2009. By then, the mansion’s wood lathing will be concealed and visitors will be able to experience the setting where Madison crafted the words that still serve as the framework for our nation.
The distance from Ash Lawn-Highland to Montpelier is only about 30 miles, but driving the route feels a bit like traversing the backbone of the nation. And if you really think about the importance of those men, their ideas and their actions, this day trip just may send shivers down your spine.
