economists, environmentalists and other scientists determines, as best it can, the maximum gross domestic product that can be sustained by our environment in the coming year. This becomes a mandatory limit to the nations gross product.
This limit will change as it reflects more ecological production methods as well as changes in the distribution of resources among differing industries. The production of any service or product exacts an environmental price, but some more than others.( i.e .coal mining harms the environment more than building wind mills.)
A production level that can be sustained is one in which all toxins can be neutralized, global warming gases vastly reduced, and all resources that are used can be renewed or replaced without further devastation to our forests, seas, and other natural habitats.
In the Sane Economy money is no longer given as a reward for labor. Personal income (the money one receives) is issued by the government as a right of birth The motivation to work now becomes the value of the work itself. Saneism relies upon and rewards altruism rather than greed.
Since entrepreneurs, those who love to assemble the people and resources needed for production, have a guaranteed income, and work not for profit but for the pleasure of meeting a societal need, there is no necessity for them to keep increasing their output. There is no incentive for them to market products that are defective or dangerous or to cut costs by emitting dangerous pollutants.
Work in Saneism is defined as creating a good or a service for oneself or others. Many will create their own work. Others will seek jobs. Work is voluntary, but once a job is chosen a contract specifies conditions of employment and the nature of the worker’s commitment. Citizens income is not dependent upon how much or if one works. Schools will teach that a balanced life includes service to the community as well as doing what one loves.
Money continues to serve as a means of exchange. As dollars are used they depreciate in value down to zero so that the value of dollars in circulation each year is never more than the value of that years projected gross domestic product.
