Church tax breaks
McCarthy reported that Verizon is seeking church telephone numbers, so those organizations can be exempted from paying phone taxes. Rappahannock church officials who have contracts with Verizon should call McCarthy’s office (540-675-5330) so he can place their phone numbers on the taxexempt list.
Scrabble School
McCarthy told the board that the General Assembly has approved $25,000 in funding to preserve Scrabble School near Woodville. The requested amount was $50,000, he said.
CTA consultants
The board adopted a resolution to hire a consulting firm called CTA to work on developing a radio system for the county’s emergency responders. The firm has already performed similar work in Culpeper and Fauquier counties, and that familiarity will help them work efficiently for Rappahannock, McCarthy said. Fire service expenses
The board authorized payment for some $140,000 in operational expenses accrued by Rappahannock’s volunteer fireand-rescue squads. The expenses are covered by the county’s fire levy and reviewed by the supervisors twice a year.
