The Rappahannock County High School Scholastic Bowl team met one of its season goals Saturday afternoon by qualifying for the Region B Tbumament.
“We have met our expectations,” Scholastic Bowl head coach Dave Naser said.
Now, the Panthers will try to exceed those expectations. Saturday morning, they will face Shenandoah District champion Luray in the opening round of the double-elimination, regional tournament at Gretna, a small town between Danville and Lynchburg.
If Rappahannock finishes in the top two in the regional tournament, it will qualify far the Group A state Scholastic Tbumament, which will be held Feb. 24 at The College of William & Mary.
The district tournament proved to be anything but easy for the Panthers, who hold an 11-5 overall record. Manassas Park came out of the fifth seeded spot and gave Rappahannock a good scare in the semifinals.
The Panthers led, 70-20, after the first of three rounds. But the Cougars put on a fierce rally and pulled to within, 130-110, after the second round.
