With the absence of significant facility construction projects, the budget for Rappahannock County Public Schools will focus primarily on teacher salaries.
“Salaries will be a big proportion of the budget that I will propose next week,” said School Superintendent Robert Chappell in a recent interview.
Chappell will propose the budget for fiscal year 2007OS. Last year the school board proposed a 3.5 percent increase in employee salaries, which resulted in a sum of $571,873.
In spite of the increase, Chappell’s concern is that the county’s public school teacher salaries will fall even farther behind school systems in surrounding counties.
“We must continue to compete to try and retain the best teachers for our students,” said Chappell, who noted that in many cases, Rappahannock is at the bottom of the list when compared to surrounding counties.
