By the time you’re holding this column in your hands it will be less than a week to Valentine’s Day. While it may be considered the most romantic holiday of the year these days, surely no day of romance ever had a more grisly start!
Valentine’s Day is named for St. Valentine who was a priest in ancient Rome and was condemned to death by the emperor Claudius. While there appears to be a certain amount of discrepancy about the exact manner of his death, all the accounts seem inappropriate for a mild-mannered column in a county newspaper.
While there seems to be disagreement as well over the exact crime for which Valentine was executed, the one most in keeping with the spirit of the day has him being accused of marrying couples when the emperor had ordered all marriages to cease.
