Philanthropist Jay Winston Johns opened Ash .h Lawn-Highland to the public in 1931 and in his will left « the estate to Monroe’s alnur mater, title College of William and Mary. Since 1974, the institution has maintained the buildingB and grounds for “the education of the general public,* as Johns desired.
Monroe is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, which was taken from his 1823 message to Congress. The doctrine pronounced that all the nations of North and South America should be free from the interference of European powers.
