The long haul is over. After months of haggling, hearing requests for funding and making tough public decisions, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors has approved the county's budget for fiscal 2008.
On Monday, the supervisors approved the $20,292,876 budget by a vote of 3 to 1. Jackson District Supervisor Ron Frazier was the only dissenting vote and Wakefield District Supervisor Roger Welch did not attend the meeting.
The budget will require a real estate tax rate of 59 cents on each $100 of assessed land value and a personal property tax rate of $4.20 on each $100 of value on vehicles. The real estate tax rate is 1 cent higher than it was last year.
The board had already approved the public schools’ $12.1 million portion of the county budget in May. That left mnghly $8.2 million to be authorized for other county expenses.
The major component of that $8.2 million that needed to be settled Monday was the budget for the County Sheriff’s Office.
County Administrator John McCarthy proposed $885,011 for the sheriff’s office’s fiscal 2008 budget.
Sheriff Larry Sherertz requested $899,005. The additional funding would have increased deputies’ annual pay raises from $4,000 to $5,000 and covered 100 percent of the healthinsurance costs for retirees who serve 20 or more years in the sheriff’s office. The proposed budget covers 50 percent of those retirees’ health benefits.
