felt really bad for Carol Anne,” Chapman said. “This is her last year of racing and she has come so close that I thought about letting her win. Then I thought, heck if anyone else was racing her, they wouldn’t let her win, so I just went for it. But I’m still a little sad for Carol Anne.”
Nicole Holloway, the 2006 Stock Division champion, defeated Rebecca Johnson in the consolation finals to earn third place.
Nevertheless it’s Chapman who took home the $1000 check, three-foot trophy, and the right to go to Akron, Ohio for the 70th running of the All-American Soap Box Derby on July 21. It will be his second trip to the famed Derby which began in 1934.
His last trip to Akron ended a little earlier than he had anticipated with a firstround elimination. But this year, he’s looking to make Soap Box Derby of Culpeper history once again.
“No one from Culpeper has ever made it out of the second round in Akron,” Chapman said. “My goal is to be the first.”
