What was supposed to bring dosure to the Ira Wayne Cloniger trial, brought drama back to the Rappahannock County courtroom last Friday.
Cloniger’s defense questioned the jury's verdict and delayed sentencing for the crime.
Cloniger was found guilty of firstdegree murder in January by a Rappahannock County jury that recommended a life’s sentence for the murder of Edward Carlton Fletcher Jr.
Public defender Bonnie Hoffman filed a last minute motion last Thursday afternoon (June 21) alleging that “prejudicial third party contact” was made with the jury during the three-day trial.
The alleged event centers around .Edward Fletcher Jr.’s uncle, Kelvin Carbaugh, and happened on the second day of the trial (in January) while friends and family members were .. waiting in the hall to return to the courtroom after a lunch break. Four members of the media were also present at the time of the alleged incident.
