Karen Jackson, director of the Office of Telework Promotion and Broadband Assistance, said Virginia is so diverse in its terrain that a strategy is needed to fill the holes in broadband service.
The “last mile” group will work to determine what drives the demand for broadband and provide communities with information about options for broadband technology jn rural areas.
New policies and government funding sources may come as a result of the initiative, but that is not necessarily the group’s aim
“We’re treading on new ground and we he not sure if funding or legislation will come from it,” Jackson said.
“Part of this will be like p guide to broadband technology” she explained. “There could be partnerships, policies and other things that spin off from this. We don’t think it’s just going to be limited to a static document.”
The committee will begin its work this summer, with a final report due by July 2008.
