PERSISTENT GRIEF

Complicated grief ' is a condition that is more severe than grief and different from depression. With complicated grief, the usual feelings of disbelief, loss, and anguish do not go away and. eventually, affect every pan of a person's life. Left untreated, the condition can lead to depression, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and even heart disease. Unlike many disorders following bereavement, including depression, it tends to persist for years and can become a chronic distressed state. It is estimated that ten to fifteen percent of the surviving relatives of people who die naturally experience complicated grief. Those who lose someone on whom they were emotionally dependent are at greatest risk. Fortunately, there is effective treatment.
