In the personal column category, the newspaper claimed another second prize for a Christmas piece about a recently-lost horse. “Oh, this was such a lovely piece," judges wrote. “Dealt with a subject wrought with raw emotion. The sentiment is genuine and powerful without being contrived or overly sappy. The writer showed perfect restraint. The result is a compelling, touching read that, in the end, did bring me to tears. Nicely done.”

In the overall general excellence judging, the TimesDemocrat measured well against larger publications devoted to full-time horse coverage. “Excellent job of generating interest for those not involved in [the] sport and providing service to those who are. Good mix of topics. Calendar useful. Profiles connect readers to the sport. This was a strong contender.”
First prize in the tabloidnewspaper general excellence category went to the full-color national monthly Barrel Horse.
The magazine general excellence award for less than 15,000 in circulation went to Hoof Beats, a Standardbred trade magazine, with Covertside earning honorable mention. The larger magazine winner was the Appaloosa Journal. The Florida Horse, a monthly state horse racing magazine, won for regional publication, with The Performance Horse and Equus won in the self-supporting magazine category. Equus, for which Millwood’s Dr. Matthew Mackay Smith acts as veterinary editor, also won the overall title for excellence.
Overall, the American Quarter Horse Journal led with 11 awards, the Paint Horse Journal earned nine awards; the Performance Horse eight, and the Florida Horse and Thoroughbred Times seven each.
Participation in this year’s contest represented 113 AHP members and 1,006 entries. Held since 1977, the AHP awards contest provides members with an opportunity to be recognized for excellence in .equine publishing as well as professional critiques for improvement.
