Frazier said he voted against the overall county budget because he did not approve of the school budget either. The schools’ budget is too high and funding cuts could be made there, he said.
Another notable inclusion in the budget is a one-time expense of nearly $14,000 for a 1.85 percent increase for county employees’ retirement benefits.
Frazier noted that revenue for the county’s building office was about $30,000 below its expenses of $114,000 last year. McCarthy explained that part of the reason for the shortfall is that the county has not raised its building Sees in four years.
“I think we do need to increase fees to compare with what our neighboring counties are charging,” McCarthy said.
The public did not seem to be very interested in the budget process Monday. Only five people attended the meeting, and that number includes two reporters and Sherertz.
