Sperryville’s best storyteller, James Russell, is featured in the June/July issue of the magazine, “Shenandoah Insights.” No longer one of the “Hidden Jewels of Sperryville,” Mr. Russell, a first time author at 82, has been acclaimed by representatives from the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History & Culture for his first book Beyond the Rim: From Slavery to Redemption in Rappahannock County, Virginia, his “...triumphant account of love, honor, vision and achievement against the odds (of slavery).” Beyond the Rim is a unique collection of his memories of his great-grandmother Caroline Terry, a woman who lived through slavery to the age of 108. It is available through Jim Garmon’s Blackwater Publications in Flint Hill.
