Since 1925, the American Legion has sponsored youth baseball for two primary reasons: (1) to help player’s develop better baseball skilis; and (2) so kids can learn baseball while having fun.
“The more baseball you play, the better you’ll be,” said Post 330 infielder Ben Willoughby. “Summer league ball is a way to have fun and get better at the same time. We want to win, but you’ve also got to enjoy it.”
•This summer, Rappahannock-Culpeper American Legion Post 330 coach Alex Baumgardner hopes to provide both to 17 of the areas top ball players.
This year, Post 330 is loaded with solid pitchers, timely hitters and speed on the base paths.
“We are hoping for at least a .500 season,” Baumgardner said. “We’ve got four solid pitchers, and a great lineup. When you can put an all-state player (Travis Jenkins) in the eight hole, then you know you’ve got some talent. We’ve also got players who can swipe a base or two when we need them.”
