The Planning Commission
decision to approve the Gregory Williams commercial tree-firewood-mulch business on Ben Venue Road is so wide a departure from what many of us have believed was the county’s commitment to scenic preservation as to dumbfound, stun - and utterly dismay.
Ben Venue Road is no ordinary state road. This tiny, 30foot-wide, three-mile secondary state road is one of Rappahannock’s jewels. It is historic. It is open, visible, not hidden in trees. It is pristine. It is drop-dead gorgeous. Drive it. Walk it. Look. Behold.
My statement to the Commission and the Board of Supervisors references several issues:
1. The county informed me five to seven years ago that this business was not permitted and that Greg Williams knew this and was looking for a site elsewhere. This message was repeated to me a few years later.
2. The Williams operation grew from a small firewood activity to today’s muscular size and scope in full of view of anyone using the road and from several neighboring properties. No efforts to screen occurred. The county’s
