Seal Belt Bill Dies
On February 15, a Virginia Senate Committee killed a bill that would have required motorists in Virginia to wear seat belts. Law makers attacked the bill, which passed the House February 1, as an infringement on an individual’s rights.
• Special Education Update
The Rappahannock County public school system is preparing the 1984-85 update of the Special Education Six-Year Plan. This plan includes statements of local policies and procedures, and financial estimates concerning special education and related services for all handicapped children ages two through 21.
Any citizen with questions and/or recommendations about special education and related services in Rappahannock County should contact Pamela M. Rowe at the School Board office, 987-8773.
The Special Education Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, to discuss the six-year plan. This meeting will be held at the School Board office.
All Special Education Advisory Committee meetings are open to the public. Public participation in the meetings are welcomed.
• Garden Club Grants
This year the Rappahannock County Garden Club will once again offer the Frances J. Leonard Memorial Scholarship Grants to graduating seniors of Rappahannock County for the purpose of continuing their education.
One grant in the amount of $1,500 will be given as well as two grants for $500 each.
Applications for grants are available at the Guidance Department in the high school. All applications must be returned to thd Guidance Department by April 15.
• Social Security Benefits
A person who returns to work after beginning to receive Social Security retirement benefits may qualify for higher benefits because of the additional earnings, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper, said recently.
“It is not necessary for the worker to take any action in such cases,” Hundley said. “Social Security automatically refigures the benefit after the additional earnings are credited to the worker’s record. People should, however, tell Social Security if they expect to earn more than the annual exempt amount.”

• Democrats Host Lt. Governor
Dr. and Mrs. Charles Butler of Forest Hills subdivision, Luray, will host a party for Lt. Governor Richard (Dick) Davis on Thursday, March 7 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at their home. Davis is running for the Democratic Party’s nomination for gubernatorial candidate.
Lt. Governor Davis is visiting the Seventh Congressional District to meet and interest Democratic voters. Delegates to a State convention to choose the Democratic candidate will be elected at a mass meeting at the courthouse in Washington on Saturday, March 30 at noon. Davis is opposed by Attorney General Gerald BalUes.
The Butlers will welcome citizens from Rappahannock to the reception. Signs in Luray will direct people to the party. Interested persons may call the Butlers at 743-5391 or locally, Diana Bird, 675-3263 for specific directions.
