More exceptions were noted for the special education category, but Estabrook said that that was due in part to the fact that the review team looked at about four times , more information on special education than on the other divisions. “I think that there is a bit of an overkill in that area,” Estabrook said. “That is not to say that we don’t have some problems that need to and will be addressed.”
An administrative review is conducted every four to five years. “In terms of whether we have corrected any of the shortcomings, we have to file a corrective action form in two areas,” said Estabrook. Those two areas are Chapter I and special education. The forms have to be filed within 30 days of when the report became official, and after that time someone from the state office could come at any time to make sure that the corrections have been made.
The other exceptions have to be corrected before the end of the year. “I don’t think that I would n ant our system to be in compliance with everything because that would mean that the system isn’t growing,” said Beverly Massie, chairman of the School Board. Estabrook told the Board that the administrative review report has nothing to do with funds, but that the deficiencies indicated will have to be corrected.
Elementary School Roof
Estabrook advised the Board that the December check for the E.M. Martin Company is still being witheld in an effort to have the company speed up their work on the elementary school roof. The repairs were to have been finished by the end of the session’s first month, but Estabrook reported that approximately 60 to 65 percent of the job has been completed.
The Board authorized Estabrook to contact Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke and explore the possibility of other types of recourse that the Board could take in the matter. Board niembers suggested checking into the weather conditions during the past few months in relation to the number of days a crew has worked on the roof,
