Then in 1975, I discovered that I had either missed a chance to build my character or that my character had been built in some measure without my knowing of it. In that year NEWSWEEK magazine, in a full page advertisement set out what they considered both the negative and the positive attributes of .Jimmy Carter, as a potential President of the United Stated. Among the positive ones was listed the fact that .Jimmy as a boy had used, down in (leorgia. an outdoor toilet. I had that same experience but had never thought to take any public credit for it. In fact I hail had the experience under conditions more taxing and demanding than the conditions in Georgia. In Minnesota there was the summer exposure to bumble bees and out-house wasps, which I assume was also the case in Georgia. But the winter exposure in Minnesota, in twenty below zero weather, must have been an even stronger force for developing courage, and fortitude, than any expose in Georgia.
I might add a fourth, possibly even more powerful as a character builder, experience than those of the Archbishop, Sen. Muskie, and Jimmy Carter, that of cleaning out a chicken house, with the first spring thaw, after a winter of housing chickens indoors in sub-freezing weather.
Many residents of Rappahannock County have had their characters formed through these tests and trials. Some still are being tried, tested, and proven.
