whatever materials were available, and some would take tin cans and pound them into picture frames, ash trays and other things.” The prisoners could buy paints at the exchange.
The camp was closed in the summer of 1946 when the last of the prisoners were returned to Germany. “When the men found out that they were going to be released, they started buying and hording as much soap as they could to take back with them because soap was rationed in Germany,” Lindstrom said. “I kept in touch with some of them after they went home, but we eventually stopped communicating.”
Lindstrom said that he had not been back to the site of the camp, and that it has probably been torn down or has fallen to ruin. Whatever has happened to the buildings, the camp should always be remembered as an example of the human kindness and understanding that can occur even in the worst of times.
