A group of Rappahannock citizens met for the first time on Monday, February 18 to discuss the state of the county’s schools, and what can be done to make them better. The 40 people present at the meeting heard teachers’ and parents’ concerns, came up with ideas to take care of the concerns and adopted the name of Concerned Citizens for Better Education.
Susan Bloss, a teacher at the high school and president of the Rappaham nock Education Association, presented information supporting Rappahannock teachers’ pay increase request. Bloss had previously made the presentation to the School Board at its January meeting.
Bloss compared Rappahannock teachers’ salaries to surrounding counties, and showed that Rappahannock teachers are the lowest paid in the area. She said that the salaries in Rappahannock should be increased to the average of the other counties.
That would mean that the beginning salary for a teacher in Rappahannock would be increased to $13,498
