The report of the Archbishop’s hardship and character building moved me to recall other reports of character building experiences which may have affected my character. For example, in the Presidential campaign of 1972 it was noted that Senator Muskie, one of the candidates, had as a boy taken Saturday
night baths in a wash tub set on the kitchen floor. This information was not presented as incidental information but as having bearing on Mr. Muskie's presidential qualifications. I had had the same treatment but had never associated anything in my character with
that fact. My brother and I had bathed in the same way, again before we got the city water and the furnace and a bathroom complete with tub. The water we used, was cistern water, moderately warm as it came from the reservoir on the cook stove, with an extra shot of boiling water from the tea kettle added. As I remember we enjoyed the baths, more than later ones in proper bathtubs. We were repeatedly warned against splashing water
