A Bach Birthday Benefit is scheduled at Wakefield School for Sunday, March 17th, at 3 p.m. Students of Gloria Harris will be performing works for keyboard from the Anna Magdalena Notebook, two-part inventions, preludes and toccatas. Sally Millar will be performing the “Flute Sonata in G Minor” accompanied by Mrs. Harris. Rosemary Fogg and Hugues Stenier will perform the “Concerto for Two Violins” and Hugues will play the “Air on the G String”. Beverly Clark and Mrs. Harris will play a transcription for piano duet of the “Brandenburg Concerto #3”. The public is encouraged to attend.
Bach, the greatest organist of his time, once stated, “There is nothing remarkable about it. All you have to do is hit the right notes at the right time and the instrument plays itself.” He once made the remark that anyone working as hard as he could have accomplished as much. At the beginning of each cantata he wrote, “Jesus, Help me!” and at the conclusion wrote “to God alone be the praise”.
Among the finest of the Bach anniversary recordings are the violin concertos in E Minor, A minor and the Double Concerto for two Violins and Orchestra in D Minor by Itzhak Perlman and the English Chamber Orchestra; two new disc recordings on period instruments of the “Brandenburg Concertos,” one by the English Concert on Archiv and another, the Smithsonian recording of the Ashton Magna Festival Orchestra; and a unique interpretation of the “B Minor Blass” directed by Joshua Ritfldn, utilizing one singer to a part and one player to an instrument.
