When Culpeper’s oldest service business felt the need for more space recently, it didn’t do anything drastic like moving away from Main Street. Clore Funeral Home just sort, of took a deep breath and expanded, next door.
Clore’s already owned th,e neighboring house, and it simply built a connecting passageway and renovated and redecorated. Although it added about 1,100 square feet, the funeral home doesn’t look any different from the outside. Both the original building and the house next door have long been white stucco on the outside and Culpeper people have considered them a unit.
But inside, every inch of the added space has been redone. Floors are now covered in a deep-cushioned, subdued, dark orange carpet, walls are painted an off-white, and furnishings are warm-looking upholstered sofas and chairs and Queen Anne wood pieces that Clore’s had had in storage for years.
“We wanted to get away from an altogether chapel setting,” according to John Western of the funeral home. “We wanted an atmpsphere more like a family home, where people could be comfortable.”
But the new area also provides extra space for seating for chapel services which can become too crowded.
“Our main purpose was to be able to give people better accomodations for our services,” according to Joseph I. Brown, manager of the funeral home. “We simply needed more room,” particularly for families to receive visitors in. Now, there will be space for five separate visitation areas, with no problems with stairs or lack of privacy.
