Wakefield Seniors Named Finalists
Two Wakefield School seniors, Josephine Rood and Mary Jo Lawrence, have been named finalists in the Virginia Scholars Program of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
Of the 111 finalists statewide, 45 will be named high school award recipients. Rood is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Rood of Sperry - ville. Lawrence is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lawrence of Casanova. Both students will graduate from Wakefield in June and plan to attend college in the fall. The Virginia Scholars award includes a substantial scholarship for college-bound recipients.
Three Wakefield seniors have also advanced to the finalist category in the National Merit Scholar program. The finalist category is a select group representing fewer than half of one percent of American high school seniors.
The process of selecting 5,500 Merit Scholars from among the 13,500 finalists is now underway, with results to be announced by early April. The three seniors are Lauren Wemmer, Halbert D. Brooks III and Josephine Rood. If selected, these students will each win $2,000 renewable Merit Scholarships.
• Adult Courses Offered
Rappahannock County High School announces that two 30 hour adult courses will be offered at the school during the spring semester. The classes will be held on Wednesday nights 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. beginning March 6 and ending in mid May.
Introduction to cabinetmaking: Students will learn use of handtools, powerhand tools, and power machines in the design, building, and finishing of projects of the individual’s choice. Tuition is $15.00 plus the cost of consumable materials.
Shorthand (part II): Students will continue from first semester course to read and write shorthand words, phrases, names, etc.
Advanced Typewriting: Students must be able to type at least 30 words per minute. Students will brush up on their skills and speed. Tuition is $15.00. Textbook cost is $12.00. Bring typing paper to class.
Call the school at 987-8575 no later than Tuesday, March 5 to preregister for these courses. Enrollment will be limited.
