Although all of the boys are attending Wakefield. Suydam is her own boss in the venture and maintains the house apart from the school. She has a contract for each boy that is signed by herself, the parents and the boy. “The contract spells out all of the house rules, so the kids understand when they come what they're getting into,” Suydam said.
Suydam runs the house as close as possible to the way she would run her own home. There is one cardinal rule, however, which prohibits fighting, wrestling and cursing on the house premises. "There is a time to play and a time to study every night,” Suydam said. “I give them structure, understanding and love.”
The boys are grouped in their bedrooms according to age, and Suydam knew none of them when they first came. “I would stand out on the porch when the bus let them off for a while so I could learn their names, and now I’m expected to be out there, no matter wThat to greet them every day,” Suydam said.
