This year is a commemorative one for musicians everywhere as it marks the 300th birthdays of three significant composers — Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel and Dome* nico Scarlatti. Musical magazines will be featuring their works and lives, studios will be releasing anniversary recordings, special concerts are scheduled and European tours are being organized to see historical Bach/Handel organs.
The Shenandoah Conservatory of Music is offering a series of tricentennial concerts with music by Bach and Handel, one having been held on January 27th and the second having been held on February 10th. Concert III will be presented on March 8, at 7 p.m. at Goodson Hall. The program will include “Suite in D Minor for Unaccompanied Cello” by Bach and Preludes and Fugues from "The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II”. The second half of the program will consist of Handel arias from “Samson”, “Hercules” and “Solomon”.
Concert IV is scheduled for March 31, 7 p.m., at Goodson Chapel. Dr. Steven Cooksen will perform the “Trio Sonata in E-Flat M^jor” on organ, followed by “Du musst glauben, du musst hoffen” from Cantata 166. Frances Averitt, Kenneth Sarch and Sue Boyd will perform the "Triple Concerto in A Minor” by Bach. The program will end with Handel’s “Suite in F Major” for harpsichord and Handel arias.
