To the editor:
When, a few years ago, the flap of Letters to the Editor concerning abortion ended in silence, I heaved a sigh of relief. But now Dr. Krebser, in his remarks about the Rappahannock News interview with Mr. Viguerie, has come up with another pro-abortion letter, this time prefacing it with his objections to prayer in the public schools. It seems “here we go again.”
Richard Viguerie is obviously too well equipped for the positions he takes to require a defense by me. And I do not presume to offer, as such, any defense of his positions on school prayer and abortion. Still, a few observations are in order.
Let me remark first, that my interest in the “new right” has been that of an observer. I confess to feeling a sort of puckish delight in the manner in which the new right has succeeded in pulling the rug from under the liberal establishment after having learned (probably after close study of that same establishment) how to use the media in all its forms. The sharp tuning-in of the nascent sea change in public attitudes is politically remarkable.
When I read his letters, the “rhetoric” of Dr. Krebser “continuously baffles” me. To save my sould, I can’t see how prayer in any form in the public schools—whatever its effects may have been in the past—would, if resumed, “have the government involved in our most intimate thoughts and actions.”
