Smet resigns
Emiel Smet, who since March 1 has served as interim county zoning administrator, reiterated his desire to make the job interim.
Smet submitted a letter of resignation as administrator to the county’s board of supervisors Oct. 7.
In his letter, which was accepted by the board, Smet said he would stay on as zoning administrator until Jan. 1, or earlier, if the county can name a replacement. Smet, who agreed to fill the vacancy in March, will continue his duties as the county building inspector.
County to get $5,300
Rappahannock County drinkers have helped raise more than $5,300 of fourth-quarter profits from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
Profits are from the statewide sale of distilled spirits, cordials and wines at state-operated ABC stores. ABC profits are distributed on a per-capita basis.
Rappahannock will receive $4,290 as profits distribution and another $1,024 in distribution of > “wine liter tax.”
The state will return more than $3.9 million to Virginia counties, towns and cities. Also, the 22-percent share of tax levied on the sale of wine means some $900,000 in additional funds to be distributed throughout the state. Some $2.7 million in wine tax revenues is returned t6 the state general fund.
Park travel up 17.4%
Some 37,000 more visitors found their way to the Shenandoah National Park in September 1985 than the same month last year.
That increase represents a 17.4% rise, or 248,904 visitors during September 1985. Some 211,966 visitors were recorded for Spetember 1984.
To date, some, 1,445,000 visitors traveled the park, up from 1,381,000 through the first nine months of 1984, a 4.6% increase.
The number of overnight visitors, however, dropped in September when 54,844 overnight guests were recorded, down from 55,569 the same month last year.
