For example, if a herbicide has been applied on a com field, can another type of crop be planted on this same field and not be damaged? The laboratory works in conjunction with the State Water Control Board and Consolidated Laboratories in Richmond, if needed, when a state emergency arises involving pesticide residues.

The plant disease clinic identifies diseases and nematodes and provides control recommendations for fruit, vegetable, field, turf, tree or ornamental crops.

The Virginia Crop Improvement Association, Richmond, works with Extension. It is responsible for the seed certification in Virginia, with the exception of hybrid corn.

Certified seed provides the basis for most of the field seed plants. The program has been responsible for the identification of high quality seed and the control of certain seedborne diseases. It maintains a foundation seed farm that is responsible for the increase of new varieties released by the Virginia Tech Experiment Stations and the maintenance of economically important varieties.
