However, not all of this season is dooming:

Halloween can be fun — except for costume parties — which is like saying your blind date has never been convicted of that ridiculous ax murder charge.

It snows only rarely in October. Blizzards are virtually non-existent, and, because of that, are tolerable when they do surprise us.

The list ends there, I think.

Locally, though, we have something else. For the first time this year we have both the house tour and a Sperry ville Apple Harvest Celebration, which will make this place an exciting place to be this weekend, and also make it a time to temporarily forget our fears that winter is just around the corner.

The Blue Ridge will provide the backdrop; the hard work and organization of volunteers will provide the stage show.

It will, certainly, be one autumn event discussed throughout the impending cold winter nights.

And, given the alternative — an October of nothingness waiting for the seige of winter to begin — I, for one, am anxious to maintain any level of outdoor activity without first having to build a fire to stay warm.

There will be time enough for that anyway.
