The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service responds to the citizens with information in the areas of agriculture, home economics and community development and provides programs and information to youngsters especially through 4-H throughout the year. The year-long work of Extension and its agents is recognized during National Extension Week from Oct. 13-19. Agriculture and natural resources
The agriculture and natural resources program serves to apply knowledge in the solution of problems that people face as they work to make agribusiness more productive while safeguarding the environment. Its work is based upon the philosophy that people will improve their family’s standard of living as well as the state and national economy through more efficient farm production.
Emphasis is given to conservation of natural resources and the environment, marketing and farm business management, farm safety and the application of mechanical science and engineering technology to solving agribusiness problems.
Home economics
Home economics programs are designed to help individuals and families, rural or urban, improve the quality of their lives. These families may include multiple generations and single or dual parents with varied wage earnings.
Families continually face economic, political, social and technological changes. Their need for appropriate, reliable information with which to make decisions to handle change has never been greater. Major emphasis is placed on strengthening family life, increasing economic and social stability, improving nutrition and health and developing management leadership skills for youth and adults.
