And from his rainfall recordings, that assessment is all too true.
In the last 51 days — through Tuesday’s rain that swept through the county — Wingfield reports that some 1.54 inches of rain have fallen at his Sperryville location.
The 51-day total is less than the average rainfall of any one of the last three months, Wingfield reports.
Wingfield reported that 3.49 inches of rain fell during August, nearly six inches less than in August 1984.
September a year ago brought 2.75 inches of rain — about one inch less than the average, Wingfield said.
In September 1985, 0.83 inches of ram fell, and much of that — or nearly seventh-eighths — was credited to Hurricane Gloria which passed through the area at the end of the month, dumping the last of the September rain on the 27th.
Last October, Wingfield recorded some 2.89 inches of rain. In a four-day period from Oct. 2-5, Wingfield recorded less than one-third of an inch of rain. On Monday, only . 11 inches was recorded and Tuesday brought .03 inches. us.
