He added that no pep rallies were scheduled and the dance was sponored by the school’s booster club. He described the mood of the dance as “people having a good time.”
Chappell said he wanted to maintain “the strongest possible relations” with Wakefield.
Although Lynn said he believes the case resulted from the rivalry, he said he was reluctant to formally break athletic relations until the case has been solved by authorities or the stolen items returned to the school. He said he does not want to blame Rappahannock High before a suspect is convicted or confesses, but he said he has a “strong indication” the culprit is either currently a student or a former student of the public school.
Rappahannock County Sheriff John Henry Woodard said his department has no suspects in the case. He was also reluctant to blame the acts on school rivalry.
“I can’t say that,” the sheriff said. “We’ll have to look into it.”
Added Woodard: “They’re looking for someone to blame and I can’t blame” Wakefield officials for making an accusation.
Nonetheless, police patrols of the area have been “beefed up” since the events, the sheriff said.
Chappell, who said he has not been contacted about the incidents, said, “We don’t feel defensive about (the accusations). We didn’t feel upset. ”
