acter. Presently, the entire downtown area is being tom up for subway construction. Everything is a shambles of scaffolding, construction equipment, closed off streets and no entry here. This effectively blocks off all crosstown traffic in about a two square-mile area of downtown.
The really old portion of the city is across the Maldau River and the huge 15th Century fortress is there. It is a fascinating place with three or four palaces of the old Bohemian kings. One knights’ hall, with highvaulted ceiling was built a year after Columbus discovered America in 1492. It was huge. There was an equestrian staircase so that the knights could ride right into the hall for jousting and other games. It was an ancient “SuperDome” for indoor athletic events.
Also in the compound were the St. Vitus Church and the Wenceslas Chapel. Nearby was the Loretta Church with its magnificent treasury. We had a long, beautiful day in this historic place.
That evening, while searching for a place to eat, we came across an entryway proclaiming a Baptist church inside. Yes, indeed, there is a thriving Baptist congregation in this communist country. It is celebrating its 100th anniversary. We went to
