still can’t breathe what is here, feel the afternoons that remind us of how insignificant the day’s news really is, what little role man plays in this overall scheme of things.

But that damn winter still haunts all that: A Sunday afternoon when you realize a book report is due early Monday and you can’t remember where you placed the book three months ago.

By October, summer’s gone and autumn’s closing in.

Autumn is spring with no place to go.

And already we’re getting signals that winter is not far off.

The leaves are just about reaching their peak, or so we’re told, but winter is knocking at the door.

Autumn is a season of unending conflict.

Last week, we experienced temperatures in the 30s one night and opened the wood stove, reached the 80s one afternoon and opened the windows.

The hockey season opened last week, and they play on ice, for crying out loud.

Professional basketball is nearing opening day; college basketball polls were released last week.

Baseball’s World Series is scheduled to start Saturday and could be played in a foreign country, of all things.

For all this opening and closing, football is in the middle of its schedule.
